Moblin on Acer Aspire One is amazing!
I have my Acer Aspire One 110L for almost a year now. I’ve always used the OEM Linpus Linux on the machine. I tested some other OS, Kuki Linux and Sidux but always sticked to the original operationg system thanks to 2 (for me) big advantages:
- fast boot and shutdown times
- full hardware support
Some people might have other preferences, but for me this is what counts. I use the netbook for what its build: internet surfing, skyping, word processing etc. on the go.
I was exited to see that there is a new project called Moblin which aims to produce an operating system for Intel Atom powered mobile internet devices. It has a very intuitive user interface and a lot of eye candy. Check out the demo here.
I downloaded Moblin and installed it on a USB drive with unetbootin. Make sure the rename the Moblin image from .img to .iso before creating the bootable device with unetbootin. The AAO 110 boots amazingly fast form the USB drive. I would say faster than the original Linpus. You can directly connect via Wifi or Lan to your network. Sound and webcam work ootb. The system runs very fast, i have to say that my AAO is upgrade to 1GB Ram, i cant tell how it performs on the original 512MB setup.
It comes with Internet browser, calendar/diary, Twitter and last.fm applications, IM client, Webcam viewer with some nice gadgets, mediaplayer and much more. Unfortunately it has no office software, which i hope will be included in a later version. I use my AAO in the university and definitely need a word, spreadsheet and presentation processor with full MS compatibility.
